​John McLaughlin holds two graduate degrees from Harvard University, a law degree from Suffolk University Law School and an undergraduate degree from Boston College.  At Harvard, he studied government and international affairs & security while earning two master's degrees.  In June, 2005, John received a Certificate in Negotiations from Harvard Law School.

At the age of nineteen (19), he was appointed to the 61'st class of the Massachusetts State Police.  

John McLaughlin is the youngest person ever appointed to the Massachusetts State Police.  John has spent the past thirty (30) years in state and federal law enforcement. John holds diplomas and certificates from the Massachusetts State Police Academy, the United States Customs Service, the National Intelligence Academy, the United States Investigative Services Academy and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

John was Chief Investigator within the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. He was responsible for conducting criminal/fugitive investigations. He spent five (5) years as Chief of the Criminal Division of the Office of the Inspector General.  He has worked on major criminal investigations throughout Massachusetts while working on joint investigations  with the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office.  In addition, his area  of expertise includes:  Internal Affairs, Major Crimes Investigations, Fugitive Apprehensions, Counterterrorism and National Security Investigations.  John served on two FBI Task Forces in Boston. The FBI Bulger Task Force and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.  He coordinated and supervised officers assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, the FBI Bulger Task Force, the DEA Task Force and the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force.  John holds multiple national security clearances with the FBI and the federal government, including Top Secret clearances.  John has conducted extensive National Security investigations for the United States.  Throughout the past 15 years, John has taught courses in criminal justice, criminal law, constitutional law, criminal procedure, community policing,  National Security and Counterterrorism  at three (3) local colleges/universities. 

John also served as Chief of Police for a college in Boston.
